Renewables on the Agenda of the European Neighbourhood
20 April 2007 - The Ministerial Conference on "Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency – Innovative Policies and Financing Instruments for the EU’s Southern and Eastern Neighbours" under the German EU Presidency on 19 April 2007 in Berlin, was attended by 31 delegations from the Europe, the Caucasus region, the Middle East and North Africa. Following the welcoming and programmatic statements by the German Ministers Heidemarie Wieczorek-Zeul and Sigmar Gabriel and the CEO of hosting KfW, Ingrid Matthäus Meier, REN21 Chairman Mohamed El-Ashry gave the keynote speech.

The three panel sessions on renewables, energy efficiency and financing provided some excellent viewpoints from the different regions and stakeholders. A summary with a set of conclusions was agreed upon. Portugal will take this as a basis for continued dialogue during the second half of 2007, when Portugal holds the EU presidency. More is to be expected in the future on renewables and energy efficiency in the European Neighbourhood Policy.
