Great Opportunities for Rapid Deployment of Renewables
in Gleneagles Dialogue Countries
10 September 2007 - Renewable energy technologies have the technical
and economic potential to attain major shares in power generation,
heating and transport energy markets in large economies. In combination
with energy efficiency, renewables can substantially mitigate climate
change and contribute to energy security, industrial development and
employment.

German Environment
Minister Sigmar Gabriel addresses the Third Ministerial Meeting
REN21 Chair Mohamed El-Ashry presented renewable energy deployment
potentials in the 20 largest economies to the 3rd Ministerial Meeting of
the Gleneagles Dialogue on Climate Change, Clean Energy and Sustainable
Development in Berlin on September 11. The presentation was based on a
REN21 intermediate report on Renewable Energy Potentials in Large
Economies. In the
conclusions of the chair of the Ministerial, REN21 is
requested to continue the work and report the final findings to the
Gleneagles Dialogue at its concluding meeting in Japan in March 2008.
The intermediate report says that from now, RE technologies should be
given priority in incremental and replacement investment in the power
and heat energy sector. Following the example of countries like Spain,
Germany, Brazil and others, national deployment policies that transform
market framework conditions and increase incentives are required to
create market pull. Technology-push policies such as R&D are necessary,
but not sufficient on their own to accelerate and scale up deployment.
International cooperation and agreements on climate change, technology,
trade, and development cooperation will be essential for a massive
global uptake of renewable energy.
