18-19 October 2004: Preparatory Workshop in Berlin

18-19 October 2004, some 40 individuals from governments, international organisations, and other stakeholder groups came together in Berlin, Germany, to discuss the specific role, function, structure, and thematic foci of the network. They developed a Provisional Work Plan to organise the next steps.

The German government was asked to take the lead in establishing an Interim Steering Committee that should guide the evolution of the network's composition as well as its substantive focus and work.

The International Energy Agency (IEA) estimates that nearly 50% of global electricity supplies will have to come from renewable energy sources if we want to halve CO2 emissions by 2050 in order to minimise significant and irreversible climate change impacts.
