Like the Bonn renewables 2004 Conference, the Washington International Renewable Energy Conference
(WIREC 2008), invited conference participants to submit voluntary
pledges to advance the uptake of renewable energy in their country,
region, city or through their organisation.
Voluntary pledges were
solicited from conference participants representing all stakeholder
groups: government (national and sub-national), international
organisations, the private sector, civil society and multi-stakeholder
partnerships.
Pledges took many forms including the development of policy instruments
to advance the adoption of renewable energy resources and
technologies, the launch of programmes to increase the deployment
of renewable energy, specific targets for renewable energy to be reached
in a country or a company, and many others.
All pledges are collated in the Washington International Action
Programme (WIAP), which is a central outcome of WIREC 2008 and was
presented in the closing session of the WIREC 2008 conference.
REN21 managed the pledge collection process and will support the WIREC
organisers in following up on the pledges.
